This was one of my first oil paintings after moving to Salzburg. I’ve always loved the medium but had to wait to begin painting until I had a separate room in which to work, since the smelly chemicals necessary are not practical in small spaces. When the work flows, as it did here, you can mix a color, use some of it, then add another to vary the tone slightly and paint some more. In the end you have a harmonious color composition. The Steingasse is one of my favorite streets in Salzburg, a narrow winding ally, full of historic buildings, running parallel to the Salzach river. This is one of three Steingasse paintings and I may still do more.
