May in the Volksgarten

I live five minutes away from the “Volksgarten,” one of Salzburg’s largest parks and a favorite destination for our daily walks. This is a spring scene, where the leaves on this sycamore tree are just coming in. I have an affinity for sycamores, having grown up with a huge one in front of our house. We estimated that it was over 300 years old. The park was dedicated to Emperor Franz Josef and my guess is that the tree was planted at that time. The fun – and the challenge for me – is the pattern of shadows in the foreground: neither random splotches nor distinct lines echoing the tree branches.
