April on the Brook Path

I love the fresh colors in the woods in the early Spring: all shades of green and lots of pastels. One of the best places to enjoy these in our neighborhood is a short, wooded path, one of our favorite places to walk: “Dr Karl-Böhm Weg”, named after a prominent orchestra conductor who appeared frequently in the Salzburg Summer Festival. The path follows a small brook, the “Gersbach”, which is hidden by all the new growth in this photo. The other thing which neither the photo nor my painting capture is faint scent of wild garlic, a favorite ingredient of mine in spring salads and soups. Of course, I don’t pick it here – too many dogs! I painted this primarily with a palette knife, although I found smoother brush strokes worked better for the man-made elements: the fence, the lamp posts.
